AKG D12
Classical standard for bass drum recording
- first moving coil microphone with cardioid polar pattern and nice proximity effect
- originally developed for voice/speech and therefore more universal than its successor D112, the frequency response of which is optimized for bass drum
- was the first of a big family of models with very similar capsule systems (D20, D25, D30, etc.)
- complex capsule construction with a large diaphragm and an external bass chamber ensures a full, round low-end
- the two rental copies are the last version D12E (with XLR connector). In contrast to many D12s still in circulation, it naturally has no age-related deviations in the frequency response (bass weakness etc.)
- manufacturing period: 1953-1990 (Version D12E: 1978-1990)
Favourite applications: for more than half a century studio standard for the bass drum. Also suitable for other low-frequency sources (bass amp, tuba)
